Dr. Stacy D. Johnson, DDSMS

Dentistry today, is more than being a tooth technician. A comprehensive oral evaluation can reveal much more than cavities and gum disease. A properly trained doctor can recognize signs and symptoms of life-threatening conditions, like oral cancer and Sleep Breathing Disorders (SBD). Dr. Stacy Johnson is that kind of a doctor.

It is estimated that over a billion people worldwide, and 22 million people in the United States, suffer from sleep apnea. Untreated, this condition leads to strokes, diabetes, heart failure, and death. In addition to causing numerous deadly auto accidents every year. Unfortunately, 80% of sleep apnea cases go undiagnosed and untreated – Our desire is to see those percentages change.

The current population of the United States is estimated by the Census Bureau to be approximately 325 million people, and presently there are around 7,500 board-certified sleep specialists. This means that the ratio of people to sleep specialists in the United States is more than 43,000:1.

Can't Tolerate Your CPAP?

With medical students receiving only four hours of Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) training in four years of medical school, there is a huge void in the awareness level of signs and symptoms of this life-threatening condition.

Recognizing this deficiency, in 1991 the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine (AADSM), was established to come alongside the medical community and train dentists in the evaluation of patients for signs and symptoms of Sleep Breathing Disorders.

Dr. Johnson, as do up to 25% of our population, suffers from a sleep breathing disorder, Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA). Since being diagnosed and treated with a Mandibular Advancing Device (MAD) in 2010, he has been screening and successfully treating patients with OSA, ever since.

Following his own diagnosis and treatment, Dr. Johnson's father, also demonstrated symptoms of OSA that contributed to a history of cardiovascular disease and ultimate cardiac arrest. His mother's OSA is successfully being treated with a Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) device.

Improving the quality and longevity of his patients' lives, through the treatment of OSA utilizing oral appliance therapy, is one of the most rewarding and fulfilling procedures offered by Dr. Stacy Johnson.

Dr. Johnson is a member of good standing with the American Dental Association and the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine. He has spent hundreds of hours not only attaining the training necessary to recognize and to treat sleep apnea, but has applied that attained knowledge in the treatment of dozens of his patients' sleep disorder breathing.

How Does A Sleep Appliance Work?

An oral appliance fits over your teeth like an Invisalign tray while you sleep and supports your jaw in a forward position to keep your airway open. A custom-fit oral appliance can improve your sleep, restore your alertness, and revitalize your health.

If you and your doctor decide that oral appliance therapy is the best treatment option for you, your doctor will write a prescription and refer you to Dr. Johnson, who can make a custom-fit oral appliance. Dr. Johnson will provide ongoing treatment to make sure your appliance remains comfortable and effective.
